Moreover, reports have claimed the First Lady has spent fewer than 14 days in the White House since President Trump moved in. However, on Monday, May 19, Melania Trump made history as the first First Lady to sign a bill that was passed into law.
Indeed, Melania stood alongside her husband, who congratulated and thanked her for the work she had done to get this new bill passed.
Melania Trump signs the ‘TAKE IT DOWN’ Act
As mentioned above, Melania Trump has made history as the first-ever First Lady to sign a bill into law. On Monday, May 19, Melania stood by President Trump as he signed the bill.
In a surprising turn of events, Trump turned to his wife and encouraged her to also sign the bill, handing her the binder with the new law and the pen, telling her to ‘go ahead’, as reported by Daily Mail.
The President then praised Melania for the work and lobbying she had done to get the new bill passed.
Honey, you've done amazing. I said, it sounds like a tough one, and yet a very important one, and you got it done. So I congratulate you.
President Trump then briefly mentioned the call he had with Vladimir Putin, who allegedly said that the public ‘respect’ Melania and that they ‘like Melania better’. He said, as per Daily Mail:
Putin just said they respect your wife a lot. I said, 'What about me?' They like Melania better.
Per the White House website, President Trump explained that the US is ‘blessed to have such a dedicated and compassionate First Lady’ and that by working with his wife to get the new bill passed, they’ve ‘shown that bipartisanship is still possible’.
What is the ‘TAKE IT DOWN’ Act?
The ‘TAKE IT DOWN’ Act is designed to protect Americans, especially the younger generation, from revenge porn and other forms of online abuse.
Speaking at the Rose Garden signing ceremony, Melania claimed that the new bill was a ‘national victory that will help parents and families protect children from online exploitation’.
She added, as per Daily Mail:
This legislation is a powerful step forward in our efforts to ensure that every American, especially young people, can feel better protected from their image or identity being abused.
The ‘TAKE IT DOWN’ Act is a part of the First Lady’s BE BEST initiative and was one of her top priorities. Indeed, in March 2025, Melania attended a roundtable discussion on Capitol Hill. She gathered survivors of non-consensual intimate imagery, families, advocates for online protection, and Members of Congress to raise awareness about the issue.
The day after the roundtable, President Trump highlighted the importance of the proposed bill in his Address to a Joint Session of Congress. Melania and her office continued to campaign and engaged lawmakers during key stages of the legislative process.
