Speaking to People about the event and his sister’s surgery, Robert, 21, revealed they weren’t ready for surgery, but she’s ‘going to be OK’. He added that before it was decided she needed surgery, Bindi, 26, was ready to attend the gala despite the pain and discomfort she felt.
She came to Las Vegas and was ready to come to the gala, put on a brave face in a lot of discomfort and a lot of pain, and said, ‘Nope, I’m just going to tough it out, I’m going to go for it.’
But ultimately, doctors told her she needed immediate surgery. In her video, Bindi explains what she had removed.
Bindi Irwin had emergency surgery
As mentioned above, Bindi Irwin was unable to attend her family’s annual gala as she had to have emergency surgery to remove her appendix, which had ruptured. On Monday, May 12, Bindi shared a video of her post-surgery.
She explained she had a ‘grumbly appendix’ for months and finally had to have it removed on the day of the gala. In the video, which was taken an hour after surgery, Bindi told her fans that the surgeons had also removed 14 new endometriosis lesions, and they stitched her hernia.
Bindi had her surgery in New York, accompanied by her mother, Terri. In her post, Bindi acknowledges her brother and the work he did for the gala, hosting and raising money on his own. She also thanks her family for ‘always being there for her’.
Credit to Robert for hosting the evening, he did such an incredible job raising funds and awareness for Wildlife Warriors. And thanks to my family for always being there for me. I have so much love for dear Chandler & sweet Grace. Thank you to Mum for being there with me every step of the way.
Bindi Irwin’s health journey so far
Bindi’s surgery over the weekend wasn’t the first health issue she has dealt with. Indeed, the 26-year-old is diagnosed with endometriosis. She shared the news in March 2023.
As a result of her condition, Bindi had 37 endometriosis lesions and a cyst removed two years ago, which she mentioned in her Instagram post. Moreover, the hernia that the surgeon repaired appeared during childbirth four years ago.
For several years, Bindi has become a strong advocate for women’s health after suffering debilitating symptoms from an undiagnosed condition for years. After being told repeatedly that her pain was ‘just part of being a woman’, Bindi was finally diagnosed with endometriosis and underwent surgery, which changed her life.
Per Daily Mail, she explained:
People must have thought I was just incredibly flaky because I was getting so sick… I would try to get up, and I really would just throw up. I was in so much pain all the time.
Adding:
Endometriosis is an enormous problem for so many people, and it's not talked about enough. I went 10 years undiagnosed because doctors didn't know enough.
