"It was just so cut and dry and unemotional" How did Stallone find out about Sage?
Sylvester Stallone, the face behind cinema's most stoic heroes, shared how he discovered his son Sage's death at 36. His blunt recollection and raw family memories stay with him to this day.
Big icons sometimes live the most gut-wrenching stories. Sylvester Stallone, famously tough in his film roles, has gone candid about the heartbreaking way he learned that his eldest son, Sage, had died. The news did not come with comfort, but rather a cold phone call while Stallone was in the middle of working on a script. That day in 2012 changed everything. Sage’s life, lost at just 36 to coronary artery disease, still weighs heavily on Stallone, haunting him at moments when the past feels too close for comfort.
A fractured bond and a moment of healing
Stallone’s relationship with Sage was not always smooth. The two, who played father and son in 1990’s Rocky V, channelled real pain and reconciliation into their performances. Sage once admitted to People, "When I was screaming [in the movie] 'You never spent time with me! You never spent time with my mother,' that was true. I was looking into my father's face and really saying that. I got a lot of things out. We broke into tears a few times." The film, tough as it was to shoot, ultimately opened a door between them. After filming, Sage described how things changed: "After the film, everything changed. We'd do anything for each other."
A call with no comfort and a legacy of loss
Learning of Sage’s passing was relentless in its coldness. Stallone recounted to Page Six the moment Dr. Stephen Levin, his mother's third husband, delivered the news: "He goes, 'I'm calling to say he's gone.' It was just so cut and dry and unemotional. 'Sorry, gone. See you later. Bye.' That was it. Not like, 'Can I help you?' Nothing. And that was devastating." Stallone had built up hope for his son’s future, admitting: "I had great hopes for him. He was going to do something really wonderful because he found his own niche, which wasn't about performing, which I thank God… but I had no idea that he was ill." Every memory now hits differently, the actor confessed: "When you see a photo, it's rough. Real rough."
Difficult memories of Jackie Stallone
Sylvester’s relationship with his mother, Jackie Stallone, proved just as complicated. He described her ambition to carve her own path—palmist, astrologist, rumpologist, trapeze artist—and her distance from family ties. "She tried to be this palmist, this astrologist, this rumpologist, she was a trapeze artist, she played piano, but she never reached out for her grandchildren or her children. It's the ones that have all the issues that usually end up being the most creative." He didn’t attend her funeral, and still struggles with what was left unsaid, reflecting, "Some people just shouldn't have children. And I think she knew that … She was very, very immature and she wanted to be a star."
Stallone’s story isn’t just one of loss; it’s a window into fame’s cost when family pain runs deep. His ability to talk about Sage and Jackie, with wounds and empathy side by side, gives fans a glimpse of the man beneath the icon. Will he ever truly find peace with the past?
