As per the recently obtained fire department records and time-stamped recordings of radio communications, Anne Heche had to wait for 45 minutes before any life-saving efforts could be made on her after she crashed into a home on August 5 in California.
The long wait
Heche breathed her last breath on August 14 after she was taken off life nine days after the crash on that fateful day.
The recordings in question, which the Los Angeles Fire Department handed over to NBC Los Angeles under the California Public Records Act, revealed that firefighters couldn’t get to Heche’s car for at least 20 minutes. The same clips, according to NBC’s report, showed how the firefighters took at least 20 more minutes to pull the car out of the burning building to begin rescue efforts.
Richard Fields, Deputy Fire Chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department, told NBC Los Angeles that the firefighters couldn’t see clearly and, therefore, were unable to ‘access’ her.
He said:
Given the heavy fire and smoke conditions, it wasn’t that you could clearly see into the vehicle or clearly be able to access it
'The smoke, the fire made it difficult to see each other'
‘Heavy smoke conditions, heavy fire conditions, which makes it very difficult for us to just see each other on the inside of a working structure fire', the Deputy Fire Chief added.
Anne Heche died of inhalation and thermal injuries, the Los Angeles County medical examiner said in its report ruled last month. The manner of death, as per the official records, was due to an accident.
On August 12, Heche’s spokesperson informed that she was ‘brain dead’ and she was on life support at time. According to BBC, it was also announced that Anne Heche’s, 53, organs would be donated.
The fire department said that the firefighters took 65 minutes in total ‘to access, confine and fully extinguish the stubborn flames within the heavily damaged structure, and rescue one female adult found within the vehicle’.
As per the released recordings, the first fire engine arrived at the scene of crash at 11:01 a.m., and within seconds dispatchers radioed in the report of a person being trapped in the Mini Cooper (the car Heche was driving) that had crashed into a house.
