Jelaniwas born at Lincoln Park Zoo in 1997 and has lived at the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky since 2002.

Jelani has achieved a following online after numerous guests discovered that he loved looking at pictures and videos on their smartphones. Jelani will come to the window of the enclosure and sit looking at the pictures on visitor's smartphones on the other side of the glass.
One visitor reported that he sat and watched videos of baby gorillas for 20 minutes - aww!
