It has recently come to the attention of the media that a school, located in Vigo, Spain has introduced additional classes to tackle the problem of gender inequality within the household. It is thought that much of this stems from gender stereotypes which correspond to certain tasks within the home, and therefore the school has decided to take action to inspire change for the future.

After announcing the scheme in 2018 they have developed these additional classes which will teach a range of skills to students to ensure they cope with various household tasks. The activities are mainly geared towards boys who have already developed misconceptions about which tasks are designated for who, and allows them to practice the tasks alongside other boys in a fun learning environment.

The classes are lead voluntarily by both teachers in the school and keen members of the community involving parents of some students. Furthermore, the activity coordinator, Gabriel bravo, has stressed the importance of these tasks.

“It seemed very useful for our students to learn to perform these tasks so that, when they form a family, they are involved from the beginning and know that a house is a matter of 2…This will allow them to become aware and learn to handle themselves at home.”
