What do you have to look like to become a social media celebrity? The American pop culture magazine Paper asked themselves the same question. On the basis that "everyone looks the same" on Instagram nowadays, they decided to mix the faces of the 100 most followed people on the platform to create... the perfect influencer.
A TELLING COMPOSITE
Why a female influencer and not a male? Simply because one of the first findings in this small experiment was that the 100 most followed people on Instagram are, for the most part women. Moreover, the majority of them are white and English-speaking, says Paper in their article. Another significant observation: more than a third of these influencers (38 out of 100) live in the Los Angeles area.
It is, therefore, not surprising that the composite they generated shows a white woman with a sharp face and almond-shaped eyes, a small button nose and rather plump lips. To achieve this result, graphic designer Nicolas Rapp took into account a lot of criteria, such as age, geographical origin, ethnic background, topics addressed by the account, and even astrological signs. However, he excluded the "celebrities" who got famous outside of the social network.
Another concern raised by the creation of this composite: minorities are still very largely underrepresented among Instagram's most followed influencers.
And among the highest ranked, the most popular influencer on Instagram is Huda Kattan, an American beauty vlogger (36 million followers). As for men, Dan Bilzerian, an American poker player, has a total of 28 million followers. Yikes!
