Parts of the UK covered in snow after unexpected heavy snowfall

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning last night in anticipation of the predicted snowfall. However, despite the warning, the snowfall turned out to be much heavier than was originally expected.

Several inches of snow

Parts of the UK saw heavy snowfall overnight including West Yorkshire, Manchester and Durham. The snow is the result of a blast of air coming from the Arctic. The Met Office had issued a weather warning for Scotland ahead of the snow and estimated around 5cm of snow would fall.

The cold spell is supposed to last until the end of the week with winds reaching up to 50mph on the east coast as well as temperatures around 6-7°C, but feeling below freezing due to the high winds.

The forecaster warned:

Some accumulations of snow are also possible, particularly across eastern Scotland and hillier areas of northeast England. 1-2 cm accumulations are possible mainly above 100 m, with 5 cm over parts of Scotland, Northumberland and the North York Moors above 200-300 m,

Many Brits went to Twitter to share the unusual snowfall that arrived overnight. One person even recorded a thunderstorm whilst it was snowing in a bizarre event.

Others posted about the unbelievable change in weather, saying that the week before they were sunbathing in their garden soaking up the sun and then the next thing they know they were shovelling snow from their drive.
