Fans of the show were convinced that Maura Higgins and Alex Demetriou were more than just dance partners after seeing their sizzlingly hot performances this January. And the rumours were sent into overdrive when Maura split from former Love Island co-star Curtis Pritchard in early March.
Speaking post-breakup, Curtis himself fanned the flames of the rumours by saying in an interview: ‘I have no proof that anything more has happened between them. I don't like to think about it.
I don't want to look back over the past few months for warning signs. But it's not nice to read about her relationship with Alex and to see pictures of them together.'
Whilst both Alex and Maura have continuously denied the rumours that they’re anything more than good mates, Alex sadly announced his split from wife Carlotta Edwards last month too. Taking to Instagram, he wrote:
I'm sorry I have been quiet on social media recently but it's been a tough time personally for me. Carlotta and I have separated. Although it saddens me that we can no longer be together, I feel this is best for the both of us.
Now, Maura has responded to the continuing rumours that there’s something going on between her and Alex. In an Instagram Question and Answer on Sunday 10th May, Maura didn’t hold back when asked how she felt about it all, saying:
It doesn't bother me. We're in 2020 and a man and woman cannot just be friends. Pure shite, you know.
