A London hairdresser cuts hair free of charge for the homeless. Thanks to his actions he has created a globally commended movement.
Joshua Coombes is a London hairdresser who has been walking the streets with his scissors for years. He offers those who live on the street a brand new look by giving them haircuts. Like any good hairdresser, the 31-year-old talks to his clients, listens to them, and takes their feelings and stories into account. The only difference is that their living rooms are on the street. Through this act Joshua aims to raise compassion. After each cut, the hairdresser asks his client if he can share their story on Instagram using the hashtag ‘Do Something For Nothing.’ Here is an example:
‘This is Petru from Romania who has been living in the United Kingdom for eight years, and is currently sleeping on the street every night in Shoreditch, East London. His story: I lost my mother ten years ago. My father died when I was little. I came here because there is nothing left for me in Romania. I grew up and lived in a small town, there was not much. I needed a fresh start and a change in my environment. I was happy for a few years when I got here, I guess I did not realise how difficult it would be to live in London. One thing is for sure, there is no life for me back there now. I would not know where to start.’
By sharing these people’s stories, Joshua emphasises the fact that, like all humans, they have a story that has taken them to where they are today. Beyond the change of appearance he offers to the homeless, the hairdresser takes the time to chat with these people who we meet in the streets but for whom we never stop. Hats off to him.
