A mock adoption

A judge in Western Australia sent a mock adoption paper to a seven-year-old boy after he asked to adopt his teddy bears. The judge allowed the young boy to adopt his teddies under the ‘Teddy Bear Act 1908’.

The judge wrote:

Application having been made under the International Teddy Act 1908 for an adoption order in relation to a hug of teddies known as Mr Denham, Baby Denham, Brown Bear, Bamboo, Special Teddy Jnr and Tiny who reside in ... Western Australia.
It is ordered that [they] be adopted by [the boy] to be treated lovingly as child and teddies.

Many on Twitter were moved by this story, many comparing it to a similar story with a Canadian Prime Minister.

A gorilla as a pet

Many likened this adoption story to the little boy in Vancouver who wanted to have a gorilla as a pet.

In 1987, Brian Mulroney, the Canadian Prime Minister at the time, wrote to the seven-year-old:

Apes are only allowed into the country if people are going to put them in a zoo or use them for research

He then explained that this law was there to protect people from potential diseases gorillas can pass on to humans. He then also asked the boy how he would be able to provide a home for the huge animal, explaining that it was highly likely that the animal wouldn’t be happy in a house in Vancouver.
