'Inappropriate' outfit

Emily O'Connor was wearing a black crop top and high waisted trousers for the flight from Birmingham to Tenerife and claims she passed through security and passport control without problems. When she arrived on the plane, however, cabin crew told her that she would be removed from the flight if she didn't put a jacket on to 'cover-up'.

Standing up for herself, Emily asked the crew to show her where it stipulated in their regulations that what she was wearing wasinappropriate. Emily ended up standing to ask her fellow passengers whether anybody was offended by her outfit choice and was shouted at by a male passenger who called her a 'pathetic woman'.

Eventually, Emily was given a jacket to wear by her cousin who was sitting elsewhere on the plane and Emily was able to remain on the flight. However, she was so angered by her experience that she took to Twitter—and the reaction has been huge. Emily wrote:

Flying from Bham to Tenerife, Thomas Cook told me that they were going to remove me from the flight if I didn’t “cover up” as I was “causing offence” and was “inappropriate”. They had 4 flight staff around me to get my luggage to take me off the plane.

The young woman also pointed out to the plane's staff that there was no 'appropriate wear policy' online and included a poll where 76.6% of people deemed her outfit as totally fine to fly.

In her Twitter tell-all, Emily also revealed that another passenger on the plane had started to hurl abuse at her all because of what she was wearing, meanwhile, airplane staff stood by and did nothing to stop him. She continued:

...The manager then went to get my bag to remove me from the flight. A man then shouted “Shut up you pathetic woman. Put a f*cking jacket on”- the staff said nothing to him.

Their apology

Thomas Cook claims they have since apologised to O'Connor, the airline released in a statement:

We are sorry that we upset Ms O’Connor. It’s clear we could have handled the situation better.

The statement continued:

In common with most airlines we have an appropriate attire policy. This applies equally to men and women of all ages without discrimination. Our crews have the difficult task of implementing that policy and don’t always get it right.

Let's hope the airline has learned their lesson!
