The scientific name for this phenomenon is Lithopedion and it has been diagnosed merely 300 times in the history of medicine.

Doctors assumed it was a tumour at first

50 years ago, the lady had already visited a doctor regarding the bulge. But back then, doctors didn’t immediately know it was an ‘unborn’ child and suspected a different condition.

‘They told me that I had a tumour,’ said the 92-year-old to the BBC News. She’s been living with it for over 40 years.

It was only when she went to the hospital because of a fall that the doctors saw her X-ray image and were able to solve the mystery. Calcified foetuses, also called ‘stone babies’, are extremely rare. Until now, only 300 cases have been documented in the history of medicine.
