On January 20, The Duke of Edinburgh's Land Rover collided with another vehicle and overturned near the Queen's Sandringham estate. Two women in the other car were hospitalised following the incident. A baby had also been present in the vehicle.
Two days later, he was driving again... without wearing a seatbelt. Whilst this behaviour may seem surprising, there is actually a logical explanation.
Security Matter
Security guard Simon Morgan told HELLO magazine that members of the Royal Family don’t wear seatbelts for security reasons! In some situations - external threats for example - they may need to escape very quickly from the vehicle. The seat belt would only slow down their exit.
‘Also, what is significant about this event or situation? Is an individual's look and appearance important? And also an individual's choice. Protection is a very unique area of policing and there are a lot grey areas, but you are always judging each situation to weigh up the risks and threats with the outcomes you are trying to achieve.’ says their security.
For this reason, Kate, Meghan, William, Harry and the rest of the family very rarely wear seatbelts for official engagements.
