No royal crowd

The Duke and Duchess Cambridge had invited the Beckhams to their wedding back in 2011. Even Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also invited the Beckhams to their wedding in 2018. So, when the Beckhams had a chance to invite their royal friends, they were faced with the dilemma of sending an invitation to only one of the royal couples because of the apparent rift between Prince Harry and William. As such, the Beckhams chose Prince William and Kate Middleton because of their long friendship. A source close to the Beckhams confirmed:

David and Victoria wrote to William and Kate inviting them and the family to their son’s wedding.
William replied wishing them a great deal of joy but [said] they were unable to attend.

The source added that the Beckhams always preferred Prince William and Kate to rumoured guests Harry and Meghan, but that security was one of the reasons for the Cambridges' absence. The source added:

David’s attachment and history go back with William and Kate and they have a very strong relationship and they were their choice of wedding guests. It was always about them; it was never about Meghan and Harry.

Royal bond

Over the years, David and William have developed a close bond, with England's footballing icon frequently accompanying the Duke to raise awareness of mental health concerns. At the Euros last year, David and his son Romeo shared the Royal Box alongside Kate and William. After England knocked Germany out of the competition, the former player uploaded a selfie with Kate in the backdrop. In the photos from the game, the couple may also be seen smiling with the Beckhams, who were seated right behind them.
