The UK will experience an arctic blast of freezing temperatures this January with the ‘snowiest period in 12 years’, according to forecasters. The weather is expected to be mild over Christmas with no snow anticipated but temperatures will plummet as we move into the New Year. James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, commented:

We could now be looking at a lengthy cold period setting in for a number of weeks and the potential for some of the coldest and snowiest weather since December 2010.

The cold snap is feared to be a repeat of 2018’s Beast from the East, as some forecasters warn temperatures could drop as low as -11C due to a similar pattern of complex meteorological events, as per Hull Live.

‘La Niña’

The oceanic and atmospheric phenomenon known as 'La Niña' has been attributed with being one of the root causes for the arctic temperatures. During this period the sea surface temperature across the eastern equatorial part of the central Pacific Ocean is lower than normal and can affect weather systems around the world, as per The Mirror.

Madden went on to comment:

The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is changing to a negative phase, and this could boost the drivers of sustained cold weather. In addition, we could also see a quite major cold spell from a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event developing around mid-January.
This much colder weather may also be influenced by La Niña which could affect atmospheric circulation and blocking patterns, pressure systems, and most importantly, the run of the jet-stream from early December and January.

Burst pipes

The forecast comes as thousands of homes in South East England are still without water after frozen pipes caused a series of leaks. Water supplies have been sporadic as South East Water claims it is because more leaks have appeared as it pumps water back into the system.

Peter Jenkins, director of campaigns at Water UK, has warned that the temporary rise in temperature could cause burst pipes, commenting, as per The Mirror:

The recent freezing weather has been very disruptive to many people. The last thing we want is for people to experience further disruption as temperatures rise this weekend, putting many homes at risk of burst pipes due to freeze-thaw.
That’s why we’re urging everyone to check their water pipes are well insulated now and to follow our simple tips to protect homes against weather conditions. If you’re concerned about the impact of freeze-thaw or the cold weather, we encourage you to get in touch with your water company for further help and advice.
