Who is Marjorie Taylor Greene?

Greene is the US representative for Georgia's 14th congressional district. She is a supporter of QAnon's conspiracy theories and isanti-vax.

Greene's Twitter account was temporarily blocked in 2021 for falsely claiming 'vaccines are failing and do not reduce the spread of the virus and neither do masks'. Her refusal to wear a mask during the Covid-19 pandemic meant she accumulated $48,000 in fines.

Greene had her Twitter account suspended again in January 2022. Once Elon Musk took over the social media platform, she had her account restored.

Marjorie Taylor Greene calls for secession

On Monday 20 February, Greene laid the blame for the country’s political struggles on the Democrats and called for secession. According to Cambridge Dictionary, secession is:

The act of becoming independent and no longer part of a country, area, organization, etc.

She tweeted:

We need a national divorce. We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government. Everyone I talk to says this. From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrat's traitorous America Last policies, we are done.

On Tuesday 21 February, Greene outlined her plan for secession in a Twitter thread, saying among other things that:

Red states would likely ban all gender lies and confusing theories, Drag Queen story times, and LGBTQ indoctrinating teachers... while blue states could have government controlled gender transition schools.

Greene's comments were condemned by members of her own party for their radical and extreme nature. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) said:

This rhetoric is destructive and wrong and — honestly — evil.

Former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo, tweeted:

Our country is governed by the Constitution. You swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Secession is unconstitutional. No member of Congress should advocate secession, Marjorie.

A controversial figure

It’s not the first time Greene has made outrageous remarks. On Saturday 18 January, Greene tweeted that President Joe Biden should be impeached for continuing to provide aid to Ukraine.

At the start of the new Congress last month (January 2023), Greene was appointed to the Oversight and Homeland Security Committees. In the last Congress, she was then stripped of her committee assignments following comments she made that pondered the execution of Democratic lawmakers.

Greene is positioning herself to be Donald Trump’s running mate in 2024, as reported by NBC News last month. Recently, she is making attempts to redeem and rebrand herself as a politician who can unite the Republican Party and portray a more 'vice-presidential' image.
