As a result, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Aldi had to remove some of their popular items from the shelves.

The food notice was prompted by health concerns as consuming those products can lead to serious symptoms and even a lethal outcome.

The latest warning comes after nearly 30 varieties of cheese were pulled from shelves in recent weeks over listeria fears.

Sainsbury’s: Salmonella-contaminated cheese

Sainsbury's issued a recall for its Mexican Style Chilli Cheddar with best-before dates of June 12, June 22 and June 23 over Salmonella concerns.

The affected products come in a pack size of 200g.

Symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

Sainsbury's said its recall of their spicy cheddar is a 'precautionary measure' while the FSA, which published the alert, urged people to not open or consume it.

The food safety watchdogs issue recalls when there are problems with particular products which means they should not be sold.

They encourage anyone affected by the recall to head to their local Sainsbury’s to return the cheddar for a full refund.
