Angela Merkel's time in office has been dominated by numerous crises - the financial crisis, the refugee crisis and, not least, the Corona crisis have all taken their toll on the former chancellor. All the more reason, therefore, for her to have earned her retirement. After the 2021 federal election and the formation of the traffic light coalition, she is no longer Germany's chancellor.

However, Angela Merkel has absolutely no need to worry about financial matters, as the Kreiszeitung reports. She already received a handsome salary during her term in office - and now she won't get much less in transitional and retirement pay.

Proud transition salary

After the end of her career as a professional politician, Angela Merkel will continue to receive the full salary resulting from her chancellor's and MP's salary for three months. This makes for a proud monthly salary of 35,000 euros for these three months. She will receive half of this as a transitional allowance for another 21 months.

Once these 21 months have also expired, Merkel will then receive her pension. This is based on the 1953 federal ministerial law, as the Kreiszeitung reports, and includes all her activities from her 30-year career as a professional politician.

Earned pension

The former Chancellor's activities are made up of her service as a member of the Bundestag as well as a federal minister. Last but not least, of course, her work as Chancellor is included in the calculation, which accounts for about half of her service as a politician.

According to the Kreiszeitung, the former chancellor's current salary thus amounts to a measly 15,000 euros per month. At 67, Merkel is also starting her retirement at the best age. The well-paid retirement, however, is certainly granted to her.
