It's been a whirlwind of a week for surfer babe Lucie Donlan. After the first episode of Love Island aired on Monday she and Joe Garratt quickly became the bookies' early favourites to take the 2018 crown.

However, when newcomer Tommy Fury decided to break them up by coupling up with Lucie himself, Joe's weirdly possessive behaviour began to make her have second thoughts about him.

In general, the public have seen Joe's behaviour as out of order and criticised him for being manipulative of Lucie - so much so that Ofcom received five complaints about it after Tuesday night's episode.

'Speaking in code'

However, not everyone is seeing things in the same way, as 2018 Islander Sam Bird has leapt to Joe's defence, saying that he believes Joe is coming on strong 'because he genuinely likes her' whilst accusing Lucie of 'speaking in code' because she knows Joe is a potential show winner.

According to Sam, 'They're all panicking. In the history of Love Island, the first week has always been quite a big week for the winners because every year two people who started off in a couple have won.'
