As if all these logistical issues were not enough, there is also the necessity to take health and hygiene into consideration when travelling. While sanitation should be utmost on your list, as reported by Newsweek, a woman has found things on an airplane headrest that has made even the least hygiene conscious of passengers disgusted.

So, if you are going to be travelling this summer, keep the following in mind.

TikToker swabs airplane headrest and finds this

A TikToker who posts under the handle @the_lab_life1, and shares videos about science has gone viral for one of her latest videos. She filmed herself swabbing a variety of surfaces inside an airplane. These included the trays, armrest, headrest and washrooms in the plane.

What she found was so shocking that her video has now gone completely viral, with millions of viewers watching along to see the result of her experiment. She incubated the swabbed samples and grew them in a lab to see what she would find. Here is a list of bacterias she found,

  • M. luteus (Micrococcus luteus)
  • Streptococcus sp.
  • N. subflava (Neisseria subflava)
  • M. Smegmatis (Mycobacterium smegmatis) Tray table and notch
  • B. Subtilis (Bacillus subtilis)
  • Staphylococcus sp.
  • Streptococcus sp.

Many people who watched the video are understandably in shock and disgusted with what they have seen. Many others found it an interesting experiment.

One person reacted,

Another expressed,

However, people might have been too quick to be so disgusted. One person commented,

I know staph and strep are normal flora that you’re going to find all over your body naturally especially your skin

The TikToker agreed and clarified that a lot of the bacteria are normal and could even in found in skin and respiratory tract. Their comment states,

Yup! A lot of these are normal flora, found on skin, in the mouth or in the respiratory tract. Some are also found in the soil/dirt. Pretty harmless!

The creator further explains when replying to another comment,
