A trip to a fast-food restaurant ended terribly for some customers in Australia, when a huge mistake by the restaurant staff led to 11 customers requiring medical attention. Fast-food customer receives $1 million payout

The Australian fast-food chain Chicken Treat has been ordered by the court to pay $1,126,045 to Karis Pringle and her son Kayne (who was just 9 years-old when the terrible incident occurred). This includes $449,312 in lost earning capacity and $350,000 in future economic loss including future superannuation.

The fast-food restaurant located in Bunbury outlet, south of Perth served 11 of their customers highly toxic food on May 2013. Turns out that the restaurant instead of sprinkling salt on the food, accidentally served caustic soda instead, which is a very toxic cleaning product.

When Mrs Pringle ate her toxic product-laced chips, she felt a strange sensation in her mouth. As per her testimony, when she complained to the restaurant manager, she was told,

It's a mild cleaning product. Go home. Wash your mouth out. You'll be right.

However, the customer did not feel better and in fact, later had to be airlifted for emergency treatment.

She has suffered debilitating consequences of this incident, and has since been diagnosed with neuropathic pain disorder (chronic nerve pain) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She had also been left unable to work.

Chicken Treat had previously denied liability for the incident, but accepted responsibility in September 2021.

Under the ruling given this week, Perth's District Court, Judge Belinda Lonsdale found Chicken Treat negligent in causing Ms Pringle's debilitating long-term physical and psychological injuries, and therefore awarded her the compensation.
