As most of you might already know, McDonald’s was sued a hefty amount in a now-infamous 90s lawsuit, after having served inordinately hot coffee to a customer who spilled it on herself and got third-degree burns. Then last year, another customer sued McDonald’s for allegedly serving her chemicals in her coffee.

McDonald’s customer left ‘screaming in pain’

As per the report, the customer Elizabeth Hatim and her family visited McDonald’s at Harmony and Taunton on July 12, 2021. She ordered herself a small coffee with milk and sugar via the drive-thru, while the rest of her family ordered cold beverages.

As per Hatim, when the McDonald’s employee handed them the drink through the window, she improperly served the hot beverage such as it sat misaligned in the middle of a beverage tray that was designed to hold only four drinks.

Hatim recounts the incident as below,

When we pulled up to the pickup window to receive our order, the young lady at the window handed my husband, the driver, the tray.
This employee put all four cold drinks in the beverage tray designed to hold only four drinks. She put the hot coffee in the middle, slanted between the four cold drinks, but this middle spot is not designed to hold a fifth drink.

The family assumed it was milk since they did not think a hot cup of coffee would be served that way. As Hatim’s husband handed her the tray, the coffee spilled over her and left her scalded and in pain.

She states,

My husband took the tray and passed it to me. This is when the hot coffee, which was not secured in the tray, spilled all over my legs.

McDonald’s response to the incident

Hatim says she felt excruciating pain after the hot coffee spilled over her legs.

My brain didn’t register it at first as it seemed like an out-of-body experience. I could literally hear myself screaming in pain as if the sound was coming from someone else.
My scream was so loud that the employees that were in the drive-thru window all stopped what they were doing and looked over in alarm to see what had happened…I was in such excruciating pain.

The shift manager at McDonald’s apologised for the incident, saying the drink should not have been handed to Hatim improperly. When the family contacted McDonald’s later for compensation, they realised they wouldn’t be able to get anything from the company without legal action.

The customer states that she even got a scar from the incident, and rues the fact that she was left to ‘suffer in silence.’
