According to Love Food, the first McDonald’s drive-thru opened in 1975 in Sierra Vista, southern Arizona. This has been a standard fixture for cars in many McDonald’s since then. But as reported by Mirror, much to the bemusement of many online, a man rode up to a McDonald’s drive-thru not in his car, but on his horse.

People are not allowed to walk or even through through a drive-thru due to safety concerns  Roger Hutchings

According to American History, drive-thrus first became popular in California around the 1950s when the entire nation and the world were gripped by the mania of cars. It was a simple way for fast-food companies to supply food to their customers without them having to leave the luxury of their cars. Drive-thrus were then introduced around the world, including in the UK.

As per The Sun,people without cars are usually not allowed to use the drive-thru. Even cycling through it is not actually allowed. The report from 2020 quoted a McDonald’s spokesperson as saying,

For everyone’s safety, we absolutely cannot serve people who are not in road-going motor vehicles, and we would ask customers to refrain from attempting to use the drive-thru lane in any other manner.

Luckily, in the case of the horse-rider, he doesn’t seem to have faced any negative consequences for his action.
