Video game stores struggle to survive

For a good ten years now, retrogaming has been on a roll. More and more video game fans are bringing out their old titles... and so are publishers. Remasters and remakes are a dime a dozen - sometimes too many, according to many gamers.

But beyond the pleasure of playing, collectors also seek out nuggets from the past simply to add to their toy library. Like these exploration specialists, who discovered a worthy treasure in an abandoned house a few months ago. This time, it was a retailer specializing in retro games who got his hands on hundreds of video games that had been lying abandoned in a specialized store for 27 years.

Games worth a fortune discovered in an abandoned store

Gameroom, a retailer specializing in retro games, unearthed this treasure in Nebraska. After closing down, the specialist store where the games were discovered simply packed up its products and transported them to a warehouse. The store's YouTube channel Gameroom visited the site.

The discovery is nothing short of impressive: hundreds of video games, some of them cult favorites and priceless, such as Final Fantasy III on SNES, estimated at over $1,300, or Chrono Trigger on SNES, said to be worth around $2,400 (according to Price Charting, which specializes in estimating the value of retro games).

The chain specifies that it does not own the games (most of which are on Sega Saturn and SNES), but that it is helping the owner to estimate their price. As many of the games are in their original packaging, the estimate is likely to be quite high, as with the Pokémon cards. Gameroom has not yet specified the amount, but believes that the total value of the games is in the tens of thousands of dollars.
