As summer temperatures continue to yo-yo, a study carried out by London’s Benfield Hazard Research Centre has resurfaced. It shows that many of Britain’s most important cities could wind up submerged in this climate change doomsday scenario.

Let’s start with the most surprising one: England’s capital itself would have ‘scores of boroughs’ bubbling beneath the surface, The Mirror reports.

As well as London, the report shows that some of Britain’s most iconic cities could sink to never be seen again: Newcastle, Plymouth, Norwich, Peterborough and even Edinburgh could end up underwater.

Which city would replace London as the new capital?

If Earth's ice melted, the sea would rise by a whopping 84 metres. The report states that Birmingham would become the largest city left standing. Perhaps that means it would become the new capital!

How did the scientists predict this?

The scientists predicted what would happen if major ice sheets like the Greenland and the West Antarctic ice sheets were to melt away as the result of rising temperatures. The study, first published in March 2006, found that around two million people would find themselves without a home.

What are the experts saying?

Professor Martin Siegert, a glaciologist at the University of Exeter, has commented:

I think the scientific community has been shocked by this season’s lack of sea ice, so much lower than has happened in previous years.

He explains that the crazy changes in temperature, brought on by climate change, are going to continue melting the ice on our planet. This leads to environmental changes that, for some vulnerable species, can be deadly.

The UK Foreign Office is looking into the protection of emperor penguins who, for example, are deemed a ‘climate vulnerable species’.
