Prince Albert allegedly made a surprising change in his succession plan

The health situation is tense in the Palace of Monaco. Not only was Princess Charlène in South Africa for several months recovering from a sinusitis, she then went to a special clinic in Switzerland immediately after returning to the princely state to recover from her state of exhaustion.

Worrying health issues

Not only has Princess Charlène been struggling with health issues lately, the family also has to worry about Prince Albert's health now. As Bunte writes, the Prince has already been operated on his head for the third time due to suspected skin cancer.

The suspicion of cancer may have reminded the Prince how fragile life is and how quickly it can be over. So, of course, the succession must be arranged for the worst case scenario. Prince Albert and his wife have got two possible heirs: their twins, Jacques and Gabriella.

The Prince's succession

Although Gabriella was born first, she is not considered as Prince Albert's primary successor to the princely throne. This is because the law in Monaco still stipulates that if there is a male heir, he becomes the heir to the throne.

Jacques, Gabriella's twin brother, is only eight years old, and therefore not allowed to rule yet. Up until now, the rule in Monaco was that Jacques' mother, Princess Charlène, would take over until Jacques was of age and could rule himself, if Prince Albert passed away.

Princess Charlène to be deprived of power

However, as the French magazine Closer reported at the beginning of March, Princess Charlène is said to have been deprived of the task. The tabloid quotes a decree from Monaco, which describes how, in the future, a representation of the monarch before the age of majority is to be regulated:

If the hereditary prince is a minor at the time of death or abdication of the sovereign, the regency will be exercised by the Regency Council.

The possible reason for the change

In addition to Princess Charlène, seven other people are said to sit on the Regency council. It is likely that Albert's sisters Caroline, Princess of Hanover, and Stéphanie, Princess of Monaco, are members of the council.

One reason for the changed measures could be Princess Charlène's state of health. It is possible that the Prince wants to relieve his wife with this arrangement and provide her with the support of seven other council members.
