The filming of the movie was already very physically demanding because there were a lot of dance scenes. But that’s not counting the carnival scene! During filming in the dead of summer temperatures had climbed, making things much more complicated.

We all remember Sandy’s transformation, the makeover done by her friend Frenchy! She swapped her little dresses and shoes for a tank top, tight trousers, leather jacket, loop earrings and high heels; a totally Greaser look! But this is when the real ordeal began…

The thinness of the actress during her transformation is quite remarkable. The trousers had been sewn onto her, before each shot. She was annoyed because every movement was a struggle. So imagine trying to dance! The costume designer knew this was the case but refused to widen her trousers. She had to go to the bathroom, eat, and drink all before putting on her costume.

Obviously limited in her movements, the choreography at the end had to be simplified, which is why it’s John Travolta who is dancing more around her.
