Shields took to her documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields to clarify once and for all the nature of the relationship she shared with the musician and provide an explanation of the contradictory public statements Jackson incessantly made such as during his appearance on Oprah.
How did Brooke Shields and Micheal Jackson meet?
The duo met when Shields was 13 and he was 20, they bonded over their unique experiences as child stars and grew closer due to their ‘juvenile’ nature and child-like tendencies even as they began to mature. Shields maintains that she shared a deep bond with Jackson but they never went beyond ‘a friendship', whereas Jackson appeared on Oprah in 1993 and said that he and Shields were dating.
This was the event that led them to drift apart as Shields was in a relationship with Dean Cain. While talking to The Sunday Times she recalls the phone call she made to him after seeing the show:
I called him up and I think I said, This is kind of pathetic that you need to do this. I am having a shot at normal life – you cannot drag me into crazy town.
She was also asked about any dating or kissing happening between them to which Shields replied:
I remember the early days when other actresses were after him and he was kind of cute, before the shift. But it never ever crossed my mind.
While they did attend premiers and award shows as each other's dates, Shields maintains that they were doing that as friends and that she was quite clear as she she stated:
No! There was one moment when we were in the car and the cameras were there and he grabbed me to kiss me, and I said, No! Stop! We are just friends and you need me as a friend.
In 2001 Jackson spoke about Brook Shields in an interview where he stated that she was: 'one of the loves of [his] life'. He continued:
I think she loved me as much as I loved her, you know? We dated a lot. We went out a lot. Her pictures were all over my wall, my mirror, everything.
The Death of Micheal Jackson
Jackson was accused of child abuse and sexual misconduct from 1993 to 2005, he stood trial in 2005 and was initially indicted on 10 counts which included child molestation, abduction and false imprisonment before he was acquitted. Jackson tragically passed away in 2009 and Shields attended his memorial service. She gave a eulogy and spoke about them having ‘The most natural and easiest of friendships’ She also maintained the same position about his charges stating that ‘it’s so hard to believe’.
