In November 2024, it was confirmed that Lineker is leaving Match of the Day and just last month, he opened up about how he wanted one more contract for the show.
As a former England striker and celebrated commentator, his voice and insights have defined football coverage for millions. However, after three decades, Lineker is now stepping down abruptly from the BBC, raising questions about his departure—and just how costly this move will be. Here’s everything we know so far!
Why is Gary Lineker quitting the BBC?
Lineker is no stranger to controversies, and his forceful resignation from the BBC comes after a heated controversy involving social media.
Last week, Lineker shared an Instagram post that included a pro-Palestinian video featuring a rat emoji, historically recognised as an antisemitic insult. Although Lineker quickly apologised and insisted he was unaware of the emoji’s presence, the damage was already done. His latest apology said:
However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am. Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action.
The backlash intensified after Lineker spoke openly about the Israel-Palestine conflict and criticised BBC management in an explosive interview with The Telegraph. Despite his repeated apologies, BBC chiefs determined that Lineker's position had become untenable, given his repeated involvement in politically charged controversies.
According to the BBC's director-general, Tim Davie:
Gary has acknowledged the mistake he made. Accordingly, we have agreed he will step back from further presenting after this season.
Lineker expressed sincere regret over the incident, emphasising his longstanding stance against all forms of racism, including antisemitism.
He described the situation as a ‘genuine mistake and oversight,’ reiterating his dedication to humanitarian issues and minority rights throughout his career. Yet, despite these heartfelt apologies, BBC management and Lineker agreed that this was a point of no return.
This controversy is not the first instance of Lineker's outspoken social media activism causing tension with the BBC. In 2023, he faced a temporary suspension after he criticised the government's immigration policies.
How much money will Lineker lose?
Lineker's exit from the BBC may be the biggest strain on his career, not only symbolically but also financially. By leaving the corporation prematurely and without a severance package, Lineker forfeits around £800,000—money he would have earned from his contract extension covering the FA Cup and the upcoming 2026 World Cup coverage.
Initially, Lineker was already facing a salary reduction from his previous annual earnings of £1.35 million to around £850,000, as the BBC planned to phase him out of his Match of the Day hosting duties.
However, his abrupt departure now means that the additional lucrative coverage deals are completely off the table. The licensing agreement for Lineker's popular Goalhanger podcasts, including The Rest Is Football, which was hosted on BBC Sounds, is also set to expire without renewal.
Although Lineker’s personal fortune is substantial, estimated at approximately £30 million. His media company, Goalhanger Podcasts, recently surged in value, reaching nearly £1.9 million.
