Ezra Miller is no stranger to controversy. The actor who uses they/them pronouns first captured our hearts in their 2012 breakout role playing the eccentric and artsy high school outcast ‘Patrick’ in award-winning The Perks of Being a Wallflower based on a book by Stephen Chbosky of the same title.

Over the course of the next decade, a whirlwind of events have unfolded ranging from arrests and eerie accounts of abuse and misconduct. This year alone, the actor has been in hot water, so let’s unpack The Flash star controversies from 2022.

Racism rollercoaster

Starting off the year on a not so high note, in January Ezra Miller delivered an unsettling cryptic message to racist hate group Ku Klux Khan posting on their personal Instagram account. In the since deleted post, according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR) Miller was caught saying things like:

Look, if y’all want to die, I suggest just killing yourselves with your own guns. OK?
Otherwise, keep doing exactly what you’re doing right now — and you know what I am talking about — then, you know, we’ll do it for you, if that’s really what you want.

The motivation behind the message was never determined, but it definitely left fans in a bitter and confused taste over the actor’s questionable motives.

Highway hijacking

A few months later in March 2022, THR reports Miller is arrested in Hawaii for obstructing a highway and refusing to clear the area. The actor's Hawaii tirade lasted throughout the month. On March 28, 2022, Hawaii police officials charged the actor with disorderly conduct for yelling and showing aggressive behaviour towards guests in a karaoke bar, ripping the microphone away from the guests and lunging towards them. Miller was posted on bail and then released.

Chair Tantrums

A month later, the actor was again arrested in Hawaii for reportedly throwing a chair hitting a 26 year old woman forehead resulting in a cut about half an inch. According to police, Miller was acting 'irate' and ended up with the second-degree assault charge as noted by The Hollywood Reporter.

Busting Burglaries

On August 8, Miller was charged with a felony burglary in Vermont, USA for stealing bottles of alcohol from an unoccupied home back in May. The burglary comes after multiple claims of safety concerns about the actor’s presence. On August 15, Miller released a statement to THR addressing the string of recent events:

Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment.

Today, where does Ezra Miller’s career stand?

The actor is still set to play The Flash to be released June 23, 2022. Warner Brothers studios which is producing the hefty 200 million dollar budget film met with Ezra Miller on August 24 to discuss the fate of the film and how to move forward given the actor’s ongoing rocky actions. According to sources, the movie is still a go, but as we’ve seen before with controversial actors, anything can happen before release date.
