The late Captain Sir Tom Moore gained a lot of popularity for his fundraising efforts. His Charity Walk in 2020 collected over £30 million for the NHS.

When he looked back upon the amount he collected the veteran said:

When we started off with this exercise, we didn't anticipate we'd get anything near that sort of money. It's really amazing.

He also took the time to really express his gratitude towards NHS staff during the peek of the pandemic.

All of them, from top to bottom, in the National Health Service, they deserve everything that we can possibly put in their place. They're all so brave. (...) the doctors and the nurses, they're all on the front line, and all of us behind, we've got to supply them and keep them going with everything that they need, so that they can do their jobs even better than they're doing now.

Sir Tom Moore passed away in 2021 at 100. The Foundation is run by his youngest daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband. On 30 June 2022, the Charity Commission opened a ‘statutory inquiry’ into the Foundation. Now, in July 2023, more revelations have been made about Moore’s daughter and projects launched under the late Captain’s Foundation.

Captain Sir Tom Moore’s Foundation under investigation

In June 2022, roughly a year after the passing of Captain Sir Tom Moore, the government launched an inquiry into the Foundation named after him. Their press release expresses that they had identified 'concerns about the charity’s management' and about:

the charity’s independence from the family of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore and businesses connected to them.

More specifically, the government decided to investigate if a company linked to the Ingram-Moore family managed to get ‘arrangements’ with the Foundation concerning ‘trademark issues’ and the Foundation's management of conflict of interest.

The government specified that they ‘do not take any decision to open an inquiry lightly' especially in this case. Indeed, they have made a point to talk about the late Captain's impact saying he ‘inspired the nation with his courage, tenacity and concern for others.’

The government is now trying to establish if the Foundation shares and exercises the same values.

Captain Sir Tom Moore’s daughter uses his name to build a spa

In July 2023, another wave of scandal hit the Captain Tom Foundation. It was revealed that his daughter had been ordered to demolish her ‘home spa.’

At first this was a confusing headline, why would a home-spa be linked to the Foundation?

The BBC explains that the charity used the Captain Tom Foundation ‘for the first plans of the building.’ When the building was first approved, it was on the basis that it was going to be used for the charity. However, a revision of the plans included a ‘spa pool, toilets and a kitchen’ which was listed as ‘for private use.

According to The Independent, the application for the building was ‘completed under Ingram-Moore’s name but referenced the Captain Tom Foundation.’

The charity’s trustees themselves told The Sun that they were not ‘aware of planning permissions made by Mr and Mrs Ingram-Moore purporting to be in the foundation’s name.

Social media response to this has been collective outrage and pointing out the fact that Captain Sir Tom Moore’s daughter was tarnishing the man’s legacy.
