After a young woman had reported the presence of an abandoned dogin the station to the staff, they discovered a Shar-Pei cross alone, tied to a barrier along with a suitcase and a bowl of water. Inside the suitcase, they found a toy, a blanket, a pillow, a bowl and some dog food. Scotland's animal welfare charity, the SSPCA, immediately began to search for the dog's owner.

Thanks to a microchip, they discovered that the dog was named Kai and got as far as discovering the name of the man who had bought the abandoned dog. They found that the person in question had resold Kai on an online marketplace in 2013. Of course, Kai's old owner did not have the details of the new buyer.

Cruelly unaware

Stewart Taylor, a spokesperson for the SSPCA said:
This case highlights the potential consequences of selling an animal online as it often leads to the impulse-buying of pets that people know very little about. Regardless of the fact Kai was left with his belongings, this was still a cruel incident and we are keen to identify the person responsible. If anyone can help we would ask them to get in touch as soon as possible.

Authorities underlined the fact that the person responsible for abandoning Kai at the station could receive a potentially lifelong ban on owning pets. Whilst he waited to be rehomed, Kai was looked after by the SSPCA. Stewart Taylor said,

Kai is around two to three years old and is a lovely dog with a nice nature. We will look after him until we can find him a permanent and loving home.

Happy ending

The story attracted lots of media attention and people from all over the world got in contact offering to rehome Kai. The SSPCA chose Ian Russell, a Scotsman, as Kai's new owner and they seem to be very happy together!
