The original Frozen film, released in 2013, is the highest-grossing animated film of all time. But its sequel, set to be released in November 2019, could be about to make history for another reason - as fans hope that Queen Elsa may become Disney's first lesbian princess.

The #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign started on Twitter in 2016 as fans called on Disney to introduce a female love interest for Elsa in the sequel. Elsa's signature song, Let It Go, is seen by many as a gay anthem, as the lyrics can be read as a metaphor for coming out.

The Twitter-user who started the campaign later shared a poignant letter explaining why it was so important to her: 'Growing up, I never saw a princess fall in love with another princess—and neither have girls growing up right now... The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees. But we've never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship.'

Excitement mounted amongst supporters of the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign when it was announced that actress Evan Rachel-Wood - who is bisexual - would be voicing a new character in the film. Whilst Disney have not revealed who Evan will be playing, many fans believe she could be voicing Elsa's girlfriend.

And of course, the fact that the trailer included a fleeting appearance of a new female character means that everyone is now wondering if she could be the one...
