During the holidays and family meals to which you were invited, the phrase ‘I couldn’t eat another bite’ surely must have come up more than once. For this young Indian woman however, the reasons for her inability to eat were quite different.
Diagnosed with Rapunzel syndrome - a very rare case in which a human has their digestive system blocked due to the hair that they eat - one woman had been rushed to hospital after complaining of intense stomach aches.
Shockingly, doctors found the culprit to be a hairball weighing more than one kilogram that the doctors had to extract out of her. She then confessed that she only tore her hair out to eat because her hair was causing her too much pain.
She thus suffers from trichotillomania because she tears her hair out, and trichophagia because she eats it. Two new words for you next time you play Scrabble.
