In anticipation of the festive season, we want to remind you of the number of dogs left abandoned every year after the Christmas season.
'A dog is for life, not just for Christmas.'
We've all heard the phrase before but it seems lots of people haven't taken it to heart. In an effort to educate people and encourage them to be more responsible pet-owners, one animal shelter has published a list of the worst excuses people have given for abandoning their pets.
However, it seems that despite all the warnings and advice available, people are still buying dogs and cats as Christmas gifts without properly considering all the implications of such a big decision.
This poor puppy, who has been named Barry Basura (Basura means bin in Spanish) was found in a rubbish bin by PetPals - an individual who works tirelessly to help foster and rehome abandoned dogs. She's looking after little Barry until he's old enough to be rehomed.
If you decide to get a loved one a puppy, or any animal in fact, as a gift for this holiday season, ensure that they are willing to be responsible and willing to care for the animal.
If they are not, that responsibility should fall on you!
