A Year After This Zoo in Buenos Aires Closes Down, The Animals Are Still Kept in Captivity

This old zoo in Buenos Aires closed its doors after 140 years and officials promised to move all the animals that were still there to nature reserves in Argentina. The area was then changed into an eco-park, but hundreds of animals continue to live in awful conditions. Officials announced a plan to reorganize the park, but the issue of the animal’s living conditions was not mentioned.

A Year After This Zoo in Buenos Aires Closes Down, The Animals Are Still Kept in Captivity

In Buenos Aires’ old zoo, you could always hear the lion’s roars and the cries of hundreds of other animals. One year after the old Buenos Aries zoo became an eco-park, the animals are still there even though mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta also agreed that these animals couldn’t stay in captivity in such a polluted and treasured environment.

Despite these statements, officials had only partially fulfilled the promises they made in July 2016. Some condors were freed and 360 other animals that were saved from trafficking were moved to other institutions. But no animal that belonged to the city of Buenos Aires has been moved.

Last year in May, park officials took to the floor to discuss reorganizing the park but have still not discussed the situation and conditions of the animals. Charity organizations such as Fundación Azara have made complaints about the run-down environment in which the animals have been living for almost a year. They claim that the works planned by Buenos Aires will not include improving the conditions of the animal’s lives.

To justify these conditions, spokespeople for the mayor have referred to complications that arose due to the zoo closing, that the city has to deal with before the animals can legally be moved to other reserves. They say that they haven’t had time to find other solutions yet.
