While kayaking, two women were surprised by the appearance of a humpback whale. The whale was simply looking for food by swallowing fish in its path. But the scene, filmed from several angles, gives the impression that the two people were literally swallowed by the marine mammal. But what actually happened?

Were they swallowed by a whale?

At the end of 2020, while kayaking in Avila Beach, northwest of Los Angeles, these two kayakers had the fright of their lives! Several videos show their last moments as a humpback whale appears with its mouth open.

One of these videos, posted on Facebook, claimed that the women were swallowed and had gone viral. But despite appearances, the women did survive the so-called 'attack'.

A misleading angle

Looking at this post, it does give the illusion that the whale took out the kayakers. After fact-checking the source, as the website Snoopes did, and looking at the scene from other angles, the truth is something else, entirely. The video is genuine, the whale did emerge near the kayakers... however, the two women were not swallowed.

More precisely, their kayak was overturned and they were lifted up by the wave but they simply fell close to the whale. All of these videos are still very impressive and remind us that whales are forces of nature. Forces of nature that, fortunately, do not usually feed on humans.
